January 2012: Getting out and walking around.

I know we as photographers have all done it. Drive around to find

something to photograph. Wondering what will pop up next. Wondering

what there is to photograph and not seeming to find anything. Scenes just

seem to whiz on by. That is until we actually stop the car, slow down, and

start walking around.

At that moment opportunities seem to pop up everywhere. That little

cluster of flowers. The bright yellow door surrounded by the weathered red

trim. Or the coiled blue rope on the fence post. I never would have seen this

had I been driving around in the car.

There is no hard and fast rule about where to start looking. A town, the

city, a certain section of the city, a rural stretch of road, or even a hiking

trail. They key is to remember to walk and explore and slow down. The last

piece of advice and the most important. Always be safe. Don't take

unnecessary risks.

Stay tuned for my February tip.
